Growing up by the sea in Whitstable, a town world famous for its oysters, means I have many memories of wrapping seaweed bandages around cuts and finding oyster shells scattered along the shoreline. Rooted in site and material research and a connection to Whitstable’s landscape, this work tells the story of my home through its local materials. In a where globalisation and mass-manufacturing have become normalised, it seems important to me to encourage localism and source materials locally to bridge that gap and make it more traceable. Sourcing seashells and ash locally to use as glaze material alternatives hopes to represent my hometown while placing a subtle emphasis on sustainability through repurposing waste, reducing reliance on commercial ingredients.
