Sebastian Alarcon Wright

Sebastián is a designer based in Quito, Ecuador. After completing a Higher Degree in Industrial Design in Barcelona in 2023, he returned to his hometown to develop a hands-on, material-driven practice. Influenced by his self-taught engineer father and his mother’s creative handmade work, he formed a strong connection to making. His work reflects a deep curiosity about materials, everyday objects, and their underlying processes. Through experimentation and research, he combines traditional and contemporary methods with a focus on sustainability and resourcefulness. His objects are bold yet functional, blending form and utility through intuitive making and iterative development.

His first collection exhibited at LDF presents Sebastian's philosophy and modular approach to design. Made in stainless steel, the pieces adapt to different environments without losing their sculptural presence. It begins with the Straw Rack, where the concept was clear from the first sketch. The challenge was developing an internal assembly system that keeps the tube surfaces intact, with no screws visible, as if held together magically. Two tube sizes and eight slots let the user personalize the structure.

The modular shelving system, composed of small and large modules, offers flexibility in how it expands: horizontally, vertically or in depth, without the need for screws or tools. After refining tolerances, the modules now fit seamlessly. They are heavy enough to stand firmly, yet light enough to move. Stainless steel sheets serve as optional surfaces for smaller items.

Finally, the Weight Bookend balances at a precise 45-degree angle, with its center of gravity carefully adjusted to remain stable.
