Daye Kim

Daye Kim is a London-based contemporary jewellery artist whose work explores the emotional and psychological dimensions of human connection. Trained in Arts & Crafts at Sookmyung Women’s University and Jewellery & Metal at the Royal College of Art (MA, 2023), her practice blends traditional metalwork with digital fabrication. Drawing on philosophical inquiry and intimate relationships, she creates wearable sculptures that transcend their functional purpose. Her work has been exhibited at Schmuck 2024, London Craft Week, and Goldsmiths’ exhibitions, and recognised by the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council with Silver and Bronze Awards.

"This Relationship is" examines the fundamental complexity of sibling bonds through contemporary jewellery. Siblings represent our first encounter with difference; people who share our origins yet remain distinct individuals. This collection visualises the contradictory emotions embedded in these relationships: unconditional trust intertwined with competition, love merged with rivalry, and intimacy shadowed by alienation.

Drawing from the simple ring in 'Portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and Her Sister', I employ 3D programming to generate randomly distorted ring structures. These twisted forms symbolise the complexity of sibling relationships, while varied colours and structures represent the uniqueness of each bond worldwide. Some pieces are designed for multiple wearers, allowing viewers to directly experience relational dynamics.

The collection transforms personal memories of childhood competition with my sister into universal artistic language. Through algorithmic generation and distorted geometries, each piece embodies the inexplicable emotions that define sibling relationships—the paradox of loving someone deeply while simultaneously feeling like strangers.
