Jessica Sunna

Jessica Sunna Gate is a ceramic artist based in South London, recently completing a degree in (BA) Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins.
With a deep appreciation and credit to the wheel, Jess places importance in creating a sense of narrative through thrown forms, allowing a personal interpretation unique to each viewer.
Having a background in illustration, sketching and designs are a key part of her making process, placing great attention on curves and proportions.

My current practice and ceramic interest follows themes of human connection and unspoken words. The method of construction ties into these narratives. Wheel throwing gives me confidence and strength as an artist. It's a skill I deeply appreciate and can speak for me whilst adding depth and characteristics unattainable from purely hand-building or slip casting.

Keeping the forms hollow and in some cases, with a hole, is a key element of my work. The hole is important because it suggests a practical usage, a vessel, a darkness, a curiosity.

‘THROWN AND ASSEMBLED’

My passion for making stems from a desire to express a sense of narrative through clay.

I used my final year at Central Saint Martins on BA Ceramic Design to refine my throwing technique, allowing me to evolve my work from a drinkware collection to larger sculptural forms.

I explore themes of human connection and energy, understanding and decoding.

Abstracting and simplifying forms through the eyes of the wheel.

From this I present a small part of my collection of ‘Thrown and Assembled’. Sculptures made in relation to souls and the spirit, showing universal thoughts and experiences.
