Increase the Noise draws particular inspiration from industry research into the use of British grown mixed species Glulam beams in construction.

It highlighted the underutilisation of mixed British woodlands and though British forests cannot currently be the sole supporter of the construction industry, a demand for change can help encourage the redevelopment of the UK’s forests as part of a managed and economically viable industry.

The piece aims to engage with this by promoting beauty in diversity. Made from Ash, Elm, Oak and London Plane, the laminated components are then split on two faces to further exemplify the inner character of the woods and present itself as an almost geological formation. Where typically we seek comfort in a chair, this piece introduces a level of purposeful discomfort. Should we be comfortable surrounded by non-local, carbon intensive, mass manufactured products? Or is our current state of production strange, everyday?
