Neve Beill (London Craft Week 2026)
Ceramics is inherently energy-intensive, yet London-based ceramic artist and material researcher Neve Beill is committed to reducing its environmental impact by exploring overlooked resources and foraged materials. She challenges disciplinary boundaries through transforming unconventional materials that carry stories of residue and place. In 2025, she received the Cockpit Studio Make It Award, gaining studio space and business support for two years. Whilst earning a degree in Product Design, she developed her distinctive voice through sustained material experimentation. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications.
Perpetual Ash: Smoker’s Lung, transforms cigarette ash, often associated with disgust and insignificance, into intricate glazed vessels, challenging perceptions of value and revealing the potential within what seems like ‘nothing’. Rather than serving as a warning about smoking, the work examines the relationship between material and outcome: how the introduction of ash alters surface, texture, and behaviour. Ash was collected from local London pubs, then sifted and processed before being turned into glazes. Varying concentrations allow the material to determine each vessel’s finish. Stage One, with minimal ash, produces a muted matte surface. Stage Four, with the highest concentration, yields a deeper, more saturated sheen, demonstrating how subtle shifts embed narrative within the glaze itself. Combined with reclaimed clay sourced from a London construction site, the work repurposes materials otherwise destined for landfill, grounding each piece in locality and process.
