Severina Seidl

Severina Seidl is a German, award-winning artist and hand embroiderer who pushes the boundaries between embroidery and fine art. She studied fashion design in Germany before pursuing a degree in hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework in London. Her graduate piece, Maleficium, was recognised by the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers for Most Innovative Stitch and by Tex+ Trustees for Technical Excellence, and won first place in the Hand & Lock Prize in the Student Textile Art category. Her work has been exhibited at Heimtextil in Frankfurt and at the Knit & Stitch shows.

I create dimensional works that tell stories and carry emotional weight, transforming traditional embroidery materials through innovative, unconventional techniques. By combining metals with the fragility of thread, I explore the tension between strength and vulnerability. My practice is rooted in experimentation, translating diverse materials into organic, unpredictable embroidered surfaces. Through slow, hand-stitched processes, I foreground the often invisible labour of making, inviting viewers to look closely at the time embedded in each piece. On closer inspection, layers of chaos emerge, reflecting the complexity of human experience and valuing imperfection, deconstruction and rawness over conventional perfection.
