Walking through the streets of Govanhill in Glasgow where I live, I’m often struck by the incredible ability of plants to thrive in the most inhospitable places.  Poppies pushing up through cracks in the pavement; a Buddleja bush protruding out of a wall. This series of planted forms foreground this everyday phenomenon, highlighting the unintended urban garden as a site of resilience, resistance and hope.

Part of my research for a while now has been thinking around how vintage ceramics could be reinterpreted in contemporary design. In these sculptural interventions, mid-century vessels are playfully adapted as apparatus for growing plants.

My focus on specifically using found ceramics from the 1960s and 70s, references their affiliation with the new world visions of the time as relics of an utopian era of rebirth and change. In light of contemporary permacrises the final objects become a curious subversion of these no longer desirable possessions, sourced cheaply from charity shops and ebay.
