Youyang Zhao
Youyang Zhao is a metal artist based in London, specializing in handcrafted metal vessels and lacquerware. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Zhao’s practice explores the expressive possibilities of traditional craftsmanship and materials. His work focuses on the interplay between form, surface, and the tactile qualities of metal, creating refined objects that celebrate both innovation and heritage.
This collection centers on the seamless mixture of diverse metals—copper and silver—highlighting the unique appeal of handcrafted metalwork. Using techniques such as soldering, raising, and patination, I explore the interplay between curves and lines, allowing form to accentuate moments of tension within the design. The juxtaposition of copper and silver not only showcases their visual and tactile differences but also unifies them into harmonious vessels embodying minimalist aesthetics. Through this series, I aim to express how opposing materials and forms can coexist, revealing both the expressive potential of metal and the beauty of simplicity.
